You saw a shirt for $97. You didn’t have the cash, so you borrowed $50 from your mom and $50 from your dad = $100. You bought the shirt, and had $3 change. You gave your dad $1 and your mom $1 and kept the other $1 for yourself. Now you owe your mum $49 and your dad $49. 49+49 = 98 + your $1 = 99. Where is the missing $1?

har har har. it's a trick question. It shouldn't be calculated like that. In the end, you're still paying back the missing $1 to your parents, there's no missing $1.
You see, let's say you have $100 in your wallet, and you decide to borrow $50 each from both your mum and dad, makes your wallet now $200. You bought the shirt for $97, so your new balance is $103. You gave your parents each $1, and your new balance is $101. You pay them back each $49, makes your new balance $3. You bought the shirt for $97, and if you didn't borrow from your parents, you'll still get your $3 back, no? The missing $1 is rightfully yours. No worries.

hmmm i've been rereading your comment but it still doesn't make sense! hahah
you see, after returning the $1 to both parent i now owe them $49 each,
$49 x 2 = $98. + the $1 i was left with = $99.
but i borrowed $!00, so where did the $1 go to? :O
